SEMENYIH: The reward for information leading to the arrest of the killers of 18-year-old Tunku Abdul Rahman College (KTAR) accountancy student Lee Kean Yip has been doubled to RM60,000.
Bereavement services company NV Alliance Group, which initially offered a RM30,000 reward, increased the amount to further motivate the public to get information so the criminals could be nabbed.
NV Multi Corporation Berhad chief operating officer Au Kok Wah said there was a need for the public to cooperate with the police in fighting crime.
He was speaking to a crowd of some 2,000 people at the Nirvana Memorial Park here on the last day of the 17th Enlightenment Ceremony, which also marked the end of a signature campaign to support the police.
A banner with the words “Peace, Not Crime” signed by some 10,000 people over a period of three days was handed over to Selangor traffic administrative officer Asst Supt Yap Sow Sing.
“The signatures were garnered from people who had visited the 17th Enlightenment Ceremony at the Nirvana Memorial Park,” said Au, who was speaking on behalf of NV Alliance Group managing director Datuk David Kong.
Au said the campaign was a success and added that some RM50,000 in donations would also be made to the sick, the poor and selected charities in conjunction with the Enlightenment Ceremony.
ASP Yap also spoke to the large crowd and advised the public to take their own precautions.
“There is also nothing to be afraid of when wanting to tell the police that some criminal activity is taking place. Your names will not be revealed and you will be kept safe,” he added.
The Enlightenment Ceremony has been acclaimed as the largest ritual of its kind in South-East Asia. The three-day event covers prayer sessions for spirits to be transcended to the realm of Eternal Bliss and for blessings of prosperity.
Accountancy student Lee died after two men on a motorcycle slashed him in Wangsa Maju on July 29. Another KTAR student, Phang Kar Wei, was assaulted and slashed just 15 minutes after Lee was attacked.
